The Edward Chiwayula Trust
The Program on Governance and Local Development (University of Gothenburg) proudly supports the Edward Chiwayula Trust Fund. Named after Edward Chiwayula, a young Malawian researcher who sadly passed away on April 17th 2016 while fielding a survey in Blantyre, the fund aims to provide financial support to Malawian college students struggling with school fees and other school-related expenses.
Higher Education in Malawi
With only 80 higher education students per 100,000 inhabitants, Malawi has one of the world's lowest rates of access to education. Sadly, even those fortunate enough to enrol in higher education often face fees and expenses they are unable to meet. It is estimated that more than half of students dropping out of college are down to financial issues and an inability to cover tuition fees and living expenses.
The Edward Chiwayula Trust Fund aims to support young students currently enrolled in higher education. Through the generosity of donors the fund has been able to award six scholarships to students enrolled at Chancellor College. The scholarships help students pay for fees and living expenses and are provided for the duration of their studies.
How Much Does Higher Education Cost in Malawi?
A monthly upkeep allowance of $70 is enough to support a student enrolled in higher education. For a year of studies, this works out at $630. We welcome any contribution to this cause and would like to remind you that no donation is too small.
