GLD Policy Roundtable: Youth Engagement in the MENA

Since the Arab Spring in 2011, youth engagement in the MENA has gained attention from researchers and policymakers. In Egypt and Tunisia, youth have played a vital role in the uprising through mobilization and community engagement. In Libya, youth engagement is analyzed in the context of the conflict and the possibilities of their engagement in peacebuilding at the local level. In Iraq, the eruption of the Tishreen/ October protests in 2019 has raised questions about youth political participation beyond sectarianism. In recent years, youth in the region have been facing uncertainty and challenging economic situations. How can we understand youth engagement a decade after the Arab Spring? What are the factors impacting youth’s participation in their local communities?

This roundtable will discuss political participation and activism among youth, focusing on local perspectives from Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Iraq. The roundtable is moderated by Marwa Shalaby of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
