Description:

In March 2020, Zambia reported their first cases of Covid-19, with the government restricting non-essential travel, banning large public gatherings, and establishing emergency committees to spearhead efforts to contain the pandemic at a national level. GLD implemented a study in 2020 in Zambia to generate a better understanding of citizens' responses to such measures, and the impact of the pandemic on their individual lives and communities. In order to generate as complete a picture as possible of the local situations over time two rounds in Zambia. These rounds provided information on issues including knowledge of Covid-19; attitudes and fears surrounding health and economic impacts; social, economic, and health vulnerabilities; social distancing practices and other preventative measures. Particular attention was paid to the local variation in concerns over the social stigma, levels of enforcement, and engagement of different authorities.

GLD Malawi Member of Parliament Survey Dataset

Published Date : 2023-05-08

Authors: Ellen Lust,

Description:

Politicians running for parliament are influenced by, and rely on, many different actors in their bid for election. Studies of elections in the West explore what influences members of parliament (MPs) to run for office, highlighting the importance of party support. Yet, much less is known about support for candidates in the Global South. Studies that look at influences on the electoral process in these contexts tend to study voters’ choices, suggesting that ethnicity, religion and family connections may play a much greater role than partisanship. Is the same true with regard to politicians’ support? To what extent do political parties, or ethnic or religious communities, play a role in determining parliamentary candidates’ bids for office?
