Project Internship: Electoral Candidacy in Africa Database Project

ABOUT GLD

The Governance and Local Development Institute (GLD) is a research program based at the University of Gothenburg, originally founded in 2013 at Yale University by Professor Ellen Lust. GLD focuses on the local factors driving governance and development. The institute is dedicated to international collaboration and scientifically rigorous, policy-relevant research in an effort to promote human welfare globally. Findings are made available to the international and domestic communities through academic publications, policy briefs, public presentations, social media, and on-the-ground workshops in cooperation with local partners

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Having an internship with GLD means you get to be part of a dynamic and international organization. If you are interested in topics such as governance and development, you have come to the right place! In this particular project, you will assist Professor Michael Wahman (Michigan State University Associate Professor, GLD Visiting Fellow) in a project on electoral exclusion in Africa. You will be asked to collect information and build a dataset on legal restrictions for electoral candidacy around the African continent (e.g., educational, literacy, or age requirements). Such restrictions have often served to disenfranchise already marginalized groups, such as women and the poor, from political representation. The assignment will require you to read legal texts and assist in developing a coding scheme. Most of these texts will be in English, but knowledge of French, Portuguese, and/or Arabic is an asset.
