Developing a Locally Rooted Approach to Covid-19 Response
Short description
This project sought to explore citizens’ responses to Covid-19 restrictions at a local level in Malawi and Zambia. Initiated in March 2020, it aimed to explore how issues such as fear of infection, income loss, social stigma, trust in authorities, and access to information affect individuals’ daily lives during the pandemic.
About the Project
In March 2020, Zambia and Malawi reported their first cases of Covid-19, with both governments restricting non-essential travel, banning large public gatherings, and establishing emergency committees to spearhead efforts to contain the pandemic at a national level. The GLD project, “Developing a Locally Rooted Approach to Covid-19 Response,” sought to explore citizens’ responses at a local level.
Initiated in March 2020, it aimed to explore how issues such as fear of infection, income loss, social stigma, trust in authorities, and access to information affect individuals’ daily lives during the pandemic. To do so, GLD drew on contact information from respondents gathered in earlier surveys to conduct telephone interviews. These were implemented In collaboration with the Institute for Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) in Malawi and the Ubuntu Research and Rural Development Company in Zambia.
These interviews allowed GLD to map needs, resources, and governance practices at the individual, household, and community levels, providing timely information to government officials, development specialists, scholars, and the general public.
The study had two primary objectives:
- To generate information and actionable insights for government officials, CSOs, donors, other stakeholders and the public.
- To provide insights for academics and practitioners concerned with understanding the relationships between individual, household, and community vulnerabilities and resilience in the face of crises.
The project received attention in both international and national media outlets.
